Migrating to Dynamics 365 from Dynamics AX can be a complex task where you need to consider the final scope of the transition, time frame and cost-efficiency.
At the EMEA Summit in Dublin, which is the User Group conference that brings together Microsoft Dynamics 365, AX and CRM communities, users got the chance to view a case study showcasing this transition, its challenges and main benefits.
Senior project manager Myen Pather from the Decision Inc. Immix team attended this key session and recommended the following points to fool-proof your implementation.
1. Business should drive the transition to Dynamics 365, not IT
A key point to the success of the showcased implementation was that IT did not drive the project. The business and its business requirements drove the project. Focus on industry-specific needs to gauge the upgrading requirements to Dynamics 365 from AX. Note: The case study specified the AX 2012 R2 version.
2. Data needs to be clean(ed)
For any upgrade, data migration is a key element to switch from AX 2012 to Dynamics 365 successfully. In the case study, the upgrade served the added purpose of providing an opportunity for the company to clean their data.
It is important to note that most existing ERP systems do not have or manage clean data, which is a merger between the old system’s legacy data and new data. A data warehouse helps to streamline data.
The new release of Dynamics 365 for Operations is Microsoft’s new business solution for medium to large organisations. Dynamics 365 for Operations was previously known as AX7 and is a single software system that helps run businesses more effectively. It is a digitally transformed financial and operational ERP system.
3. Look at the current level of ERP complexity and customisation
Consider the complexity of the custom implementation in the current system and the new upgrade deliverables. The presented solution highlighted the importance of customisation when upgrading.
Review whether the new software can replace custom development in the old software, and prepare to take the necessary steps to allow seamless customisation for your ERP system.
4. The use of a vendor partner is key
Although the showcased project ran internally, the use of a partner proved essential. Enterprise deployments require a fruitful collaboration between the client and vendor to ensure alignment with customer requirements and project goals.
A recommended course of action is to employ solution architects on larger scale projects instead of having lead consultants fulfilling this role. Overall, the success of a transitioning project depends on team collaboration and clear business goals.
Summit EMEA is the User Group conference that brings Microsoft Dynamics 365, AX and CRM users, industry experts and software development vendors together to discuss important issues, to learn about product updates, and to find genuine solutions that suit specific business needs.
