Microsoft could release the new Dynamics AX 7 in March 2016 according to guidance reportedly provided to partners at a virtual launch event.
The information was reported by Volker Deuss and aligns with Microsoft’s most recent guidance of a first quarter of calendar year 2016 to officially launch the product. A Microsoft spokesperson would only confirm that the plan is still for Q1 2016.
The new Dynamics AX, formerly known by its codename “AX 7“, has been in public preview since late 2015, which meant that prospects could begin using the Azure-hosted software without many limitations – with support from AX partners. Before the public preview, Microsoft ran a TAP program with a limited number of preview customers and partners.
The relatively long preview period for the new AX release, including the TAP, public preview, the recent virtual launch event, and the upcoming technical conference in February, are all essential to Microsoft’s success in launching the new AX via an AX partner channel that has been criticized in the past for its readiness and depth of experienced consultants.
Microsoft aims to improve uptake of the new AX in a range of ways, including its new web based interface, use of Azure services – many of which are bundled into the subscription pricing model, the Lifecycle Services platform, and improved tools for some of the most painful aspects of AX projects of the past. For example, data migration issues should be eased with the introduction of four times more entities than exist in AX 2012. More entities means better control over the data coming into the system, reducing custom migration efforts and allowing for more consistency and repeatability.
