Spotless accounting reports are essential when presenting results to the public which is why a group of global mining companies gave AMIRA International the mandate of developing a set of rigorous yet practical metal accounting guidelines for the mining and metallurgical industry.
Meeting these 10 guidelines, known as the AMIRA P754 Metal Accounting Project, should be the aim of the metal accounting industry when selecting an accounting solution. In this three-part post we’re going to show you how Microsoft AX PAM fulfils these guidelines making it the best choice for your mining operation.
The system should be based on accurate measurements of mass and metal content
PAM can take weights in industry-specific units such as troy ounces. Typical accounting and efficiency calculations are done using mass movements or stocktakes posted to tracked auditable journals as streams are processed through various sites/warehouses/locations using AX BOM ‘recipes’ to predict results if required until final LIMS results allow moistures/mass/content calculations. For non-weighed streams such as tails PAM can use the two-product formula for efficiency calculations.
xMMP (exploration, Mining & Minerals Processing) is a mining “ERP” solution that covers the Total Life of Mine (‘LOM’). Managing mineral rights (tenements) claims, exploration, drilling, EPCM for the development phase, actual mining, stockpiles, plant, shipping and dispatching all the way to mine rehabilitation.
The system must be consistent and transparent and the design must incorporate the outcomes of a risk assessment of all aspects of the metal accounting process.
Once process and stockpiles are configured with the aid of a super-user, the PAM system is secured from unauthorised changes to ensure consistency though new processes, feeds, by-products and storage areas can be added as required. The AX interface uses Microsoft standard functionality and context-based menus, chosen as a foundation for PAM partly because of its flexibility. Automation and/or validation of input using historians or SCADA and LIMS will improve system accuracy.
The accounting procedures must be well documented and user friendly
Most of the custom PAM screens are very similar to the industry-standard AX core modules, and are easy to learn when compared to certain other ERP systems. While all data is easily exported to cubes or Excel for analysis, the calculations of recoveries and stocks for formal reports cannot be modified by unauthorised users.
