To encourage South African youth and much-needed STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) skills development in schools, Decision Inc. Immix has pledged its sponsorship towards a local school team participating in the next round of the First Lego League Competition.
The First Lego League initiative lets school teams design, build and program robots using LEGO, motors, sensors and their programming skills. Participating teams learn more about technology and innovation and gain valuable problem-solving, critical thinking and teambuilding skills.
Teams made up of maximum ten members from grades 4 to 8 are guided by two or more adult coaches to research and develop a solution to a real-world problem such as food safety, water scarcity, recycling, energy and more using STEM skills and plenty of creativity.
Presenting and solving the solution requires each team to design, build, and program a robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS ®, and then competing against other teams on a ‘table-top’ playing field.
The new release of Dynamics 365 for Operations is Microsoft’s new business solution for medium to large organisations. Dynamics 365 for Operations was previously known as AX7 and is a single software system that helps run businesses more effectively. It is a digitally transformed financial and operational ERP system.
The team ZobotZwarries, consisting of six boys from Hoërskool Zwartkops in Centurion, qualified for the next phase of the competition and will compete against other teams at the Estonian Open International in Tallin on 6-8 June.
The team developed a practical solution to finding a way to capture overflowing water from rain to store it and to minimise the request for water from the municipality for the school. This initiative could save the school money on water bills and support environmental challenges by saving water.
ZobotZwarries is also scheduled to attend the next leg of the Gauteng Open on 13 October 2018, before competing in the Nationals. The 2018/2019 First Lego League is the 30th season of the competition. The next round of the competition, themed INTO ORBIT, invites teams to explore, challenge, and innovate in the vast expanse of space.
During the INTO ORBIT season, teams will choose and solve a real-world problem as part of their Project. They will also build, test, and program an autonomous robot using LEGO® MINDSTORMS® technology to solve a set of missions in the Robot Game.
The Estonian Open leg of the competition, organised by MTÜ Robotika, will welcome 100 teams from more than 80 countries, including South Africa, to celebrate STEM and Robotics on the occasion of Estonia’s 100th anniversary.
Decision Inc. Immix wishes ZobotZwarries all the best in their overseas First Lego League competitions and hope its support makes even just a small difference to encourage and promote South African youngsters in getting involved in technology and innovation whilst developing an interest in the field along with gaining new skills.
