Q: Tell me a bit more about your professional journey?
A: I am a chartered management accountant by profession who landed in the mining industry early in my career. I have worked in the mining field, understanding and experiencing first-hand the challenges facing the industry due to ineffective systems, as well as in a head office environment where consolidation and management information is a frustration. I have worked in numerous functional verticals, which has given me a holistic understanding of the total value chain of a mining environment.
Q: You recently attended the Junior Indaba in Johannesburg. What were the highlights of the Junior Indaba?
A: There are a couple of things that stood out:
- Dr Dlamini Zuma announced the launch of an African Minerals Development Centre, aimed at supporting and ensuring that African governments are better equipped to negotiate better terms and contracts in mining.
- The lessons/experiences/advice that legends such as Neal Froneman, Rob Still, Johan Dippenaar, Andy Clay, to name a few, shared was very relevant and provided good insight.
- Inspector of Mines, David Msiza from the Department of Minerals and Resources reminded delegates of South Africa’s abundant world-class mineral resources and that the roll-out has started to unlock the infrastructure opportunities in energy generation, transport, health and education, to name a few; all very positive for South Africa.
Q: Did you have any specific goals or aims for attending the Junior Indaba?
A: My main reason for attending the Junior Indaba was to better understand the world of junior miners. It is such an important part of the future of the mining industry and I fully agree that they need all the support they can get. It is a very important part in the funnel of the future mining industry in the world, not just in South Africa.
Q: What is Resolve Immix’s unique value-add for mining companies? Why do they need you?
A: Resolve Immix is a software solution provider, including mining specific solutions managing elements such as SHEQ/HSE, Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS), Stores Requisition Management and many other tailored solutions embedded within our ERP solution, Microsoft Dynamics AX.
A big opportunity lies in the industry’s ability to confront the cost/productivity challenge. It revolves around the ability to measure and track performance in such a way that managers can see if and when any progress is being made. Existing approaches to measuring mining productivity are limited. Integrated, cost-effective, real-time management information systems that create transparency for quick reaction time will allow operations to focus on production and doing the right things in the right way.
At the Junior Indaba, MSA Group’s MD Keith Scott reiterated that the use of technology is a major player in the dramatic reduction of operational costs!
That would be the benefit that Resolve Immix brings to the table – cost-effective, world-class software specifically developed for the mining industry.
Q: One of the focuses of the Junior Indaba was development of young mines – an important element of the mining industry at the moment. How can Resolve Immix contribute to this?
A: Microsoft Dynamics is rated by analysts as more affordable and cost-effective than similar products. Dynamics xMMP is an integrated system providing mininging operations with best-of-breed tools and real-time data needed to improve asset performance, impress compliance and increase productivity from mine to final product. It is an integrated system that grants relevant, transparent and reliable business intelligence across the mining value chain.
Q: How would you describe the current state of South Africa’s mining industry?
A: The current market conditions and commodity price are well documented and talked about. Further to that, many existing mines are maturing, lower grades of ore is extracted and hauling distances (cost) are increasing. Based on that, a challenge is to align the industry to the change in environment. Cost reductions needs to be based on actions that will allow the business to survive. Technology and systems that enhances cost-effectiveness, increases productivity and improves real-time information for decision-making is crucial.
Q: What do you enjoy most about your job?
A: Seeing strategy turn into reality and the fact that you could contribute to the growth of a company in which you really believe.
Q: What has been your greatest achievement, both personally and professionally?
A: Due to my experience in various departments in my previous mining company, I was part of a small team responsible for initiating action steps to align the business to the changing market conditions, after forecasts showed that commodity prices were going to be a real challenge to the industry. Through that team, we managed to stay ahead of the curve. That is strategy turned into positive reality!
Q: What makes Resolve Immix stand out above its competitors? It is a market leader in the country and has one of the largest customer bases of all the country’s Microsoft partners. What lies behind this success?
A: The dedication of a management team, the positive culture of the whole company is a driving force of note! Taking into account that Resolve Immix work is based on the basis of world-leading software, it is easy to understand the company’s success.
